From the tip of the Shanties to the top of the north COLDFORD DAILY has the news.
The largest newspaper in the area they have been first to inform the people of some of the most significant events the Shady City has ever seen such as the kidnapping of Billionaire Ernest BECKINGRIDGE’s son, George. They also were first in line to report on CONFESSIONS killer Tracey Campbell after she murdered half of her anatomy class. If it happens within the Coldford City district you will read it first at Coldford Daily.
Boasting some of the best journalists such as SAM CRUSOW (winner of the prestigious PENN prize for literature) and MADELINE LOWER who despite facing discrimination in the Daily offices because of gender has proven time and time again her worth as an investigative journalist.
Owned by the OWEN family it can be said that although they are first to bring news to the people they are also in control of what the people are allowed to hear. This is perfect when you want to hide skeletons back in the closet and the Owens have many of those.

One of five Mack children born to Brendan and Anne Mack. Paddy is the second eldest of his three brothers (Kieran, Aiden, Alfie) and his sister (Siobhan). He is seen as the most competent to lead the Distillery. He is the most level headed of the Macks but he isn’t without the skills and endurance it requires to run such a tough industry in the Shady City. The MACK DISTILLERY has been supplying the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB since it’s founding and as a result Paddy (AKA Patrick) has a steady working relationship with the Boss Lady TABITHA.

Paddy is a good looking, kind natured man but with the roguish charm one would expect from the Bellfield area. He and his brothers are the biggest supporters of football club BELLFIELD FC. The fans of the club had gotten such a terrible reputation after riots started at an away match it was up to Paddy to step in and shut the violence down so that the team that his distillery sponsored wasn’t removed from the league completely.
The explosions around the city linked to the HEADLINERS are rumoured to have been assisted and in fact provided by the Mack’s and their factory workers. Although, Paddy is attempting to bring them into a more peaceful era things in Shady City won’t improve unless he is willing to show a little strength through violence.

LYDIA kept her eyes peeled. The girl, Emily, she met at her AUDITION was stretching in the corner. Emily wasn’t in the ballet any more. When the recession hit, Coldford City Ballet reduced their performances to half of their normal schedule and let half of their dancers go too. It was a last resort but work as a KNOCK KNOCK GIRL was all she could get. Still Emily stretched her ballerina legs like it mattered.
Lydia couldn’t let herself become too distracted by the plight of the other girls. The KNOCK KNOCK club kept them safe as they could be in that part of the Shady City. Sensible men knew better than to touch them without invitation.
There were a few things that surprised Lydia when she managed to get on the inside. The first was how well the girls were treated. They were the back bone of the club. Comedians, magicians, drag acts and singers all graced the stage but it was the scantily clad girls that drew the customers in and the adult entertainment that kept them there. That had always been the way of the club, ever since it was founded. Over the years it had become a cover of something much more sinister. That was what brought Lydia there. She was to observe and report but only engage if necessary.
“All right girls! Let’s get a move on, shall we?” screeched Bette from the doorway. “And Grace, get that fucking leotard washed. You look like a hobbo we’ve dragged in off the street.”
The girl named Grace, a slim, toned girl with sharply cut blonde hair picked at her costume. Some of the sequins had fallen off and her tights had laddered.
Bette was a middle aged woman with a severely angled face, dark hair and penciled eyebrows. She was no stranger to the ways of the club. She had been a Knock Knock girl herself back in her younger days. She was a feather dancer who had shared the stage with the old Baroness. She had been where they had been and she knew all too well how the city treated young women trying to make their way in the world. She still held some of the glamour of her life as a dancer with painted red lips and heavy made eyes.
The door opened and a girl in her early twenties came stumbling in. She was bleary eyed and dropped a bag that was hanging on her shoulder, almost tripping on it. She stumbled over to Bette and clutched onto her. Bette grabbed her face and stared deep into her eyes.
“Are you fucking junked?” she asked, moving the girl’s head from side to side.
The girl’s lips puckered under Bette’s grasp. “No, I’m fine,” she said.
Bette released her. “Like Hell you are. Do you think I was born yesterday? I know someone junked up on needles when I see them. Go to the bar and have Lisa give you a pick me up. We open in a few hours and if you come back in here looking bright and fuckable don’t come back at all.” The girl stumbled towards the bar where Lisa, the bar maid, was setting up. “If I find out who is selling her needles I’ll hang them from a fucking lamp post,” Bette growled to herself.
She was a tough mistress. She run a tight ship with the responsibility she had but Lydia’s eyes were on a bigger prize. Rumours were rife of extortion, murder and a connection to explosions across the city. Lydia had to be patient. She had to play her part, dance and flirt her way through. That night she was to share a stage with the BOSS LADY herself.

Lydia isn’t afraid to throw herself into the thick of the action. As a Knock Knock girl she is well protected. Most people know that you are taking a huge risk if you think you are able to get too close to the girls.
A Tokashiman native, raised in the Northern town of Bournton, Lydia is a pleasant face in the Shady City. Normally a pleasant face in these parts would be cause for suspicion but her sweet disposition, friendly approach coupled with an endearing attitiude make it easy for her to blend into Coldford society.
She is well liked by the patrons of the Knock Knock Club as well as the other staff. She finds herself on the receiving end of Tabitha’s aggression but she takes it in her stride. She has a job to do after all, a job that goes beyond flirting with customers, dancing and distracting.
Lydia has her reasons for being in the Knock Knock club and it’s more than just a job to her. It is the ideal place to observe, to learn and to build a case. In order to do that she has to keep her head down, do her job and keep her feet firm when it comes to back lash from the Boss Lady herself.
Lydia still has a huge part to play in Sam’s story. As someone who has been on the inside, she has seen it all.

Sam was never shy of a story. A hard hitting reporter with a good heart he is always trying to get to the truth of the matter. The trouble is, in the Shady City that truth can be messy and digging around in the background of those in charge can lead to disaster.
He is honest to a fault and caring but when challenged he will stand up against even the most dangerous of villains. Sam is loved and hated in equal measure. Those who he has helped reveal the truth and those he has brought down with his journalism.
Nothing will stop Sam getting to the truth of the story. Even a night at the Knock Knock Club.
Originally from the Jamestown area – a quiet little suburb – he has adapted to life in Coldfold. His work for the COLDFORD DAILY was seeing him and his wife Theresa through the recession.
The story will be chased to some of the shadiest places in the Shady City.
He has chased the story on an explosion in the WEIR HOTEL, he has pushed CONFESSIONS KILLER Tracey Campbell for an interview and he was one of the first to report when Alice Beckingridge of the BECKINGRIDGE FINANCIAL FIRM was accused of murder. Of all these stories none compared to when he was led to the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB in search of the missing Mayor. That was when the true dirty face of the city began to reveal itself.
It’s not easy being a reporter in a city that is tearing itself apart from within. Sam is learning that the hard way.
With the largest stadium and three of the most skilled players transferred from the coastal city of Luen, COLDFORD CITY are the team to beat in the National Premier League. Although having the money to buy top players does bring it’s fair share of problems. Striker, Andre Luis frequently dominates the headlines for his antics off the pitch as much as on. He is a frequent goal scorer but his personal life often takes centre stage. Rumours followed him from Luen that he was willing to throw games for the right pay. Some say it was in the Shady City he learned to PLAY THE GAME .

Their trophy cabinets are full but there is just one prize that alludes them. Andre Luis has worked his entire career to receive the Golden Boot. As it stands that accolade belongs to City’s fierce rivals COLDFORD ATHLETIC and their star, Samuel Connelly.
A season unbeaten. City dominated the league.

Located to the West, Bellfield football club is proudly supported by the Mack family of Mack and Sons whiskey distillery, suppliers of the KNOCK KNOCK club.
As a travelling team Bellfield have garnered a reputation for instigating riots and wrecking opposing stadiums. The travelling fan group known as THE FLEET are usually responsible. They have received several sanctions from the football association but the final ban came after a visit to HATHFIELD BAY when damage was caused to the stadium and several Bay fans hospitalised.
When word reached the Distillery that the football association were set to remove Bellfield from the league, the sponsors of the team stepped in. Current chair of Mack and Sons, Patrick, said, “The behaviour of the Bellfield fans was unacceptable and does not represent us as a club.”
The point was moot though because the following week the FLEET member responsible for causing the trouble died in a alleged car crash.

Marcus is a no nonsense man who knows just what it takes to get a job done. He is fully acquainted with the darker side of the Shady City. With his strong connections to the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB and his auction house holding control of City Main there are enemies gathering around him.
What is most distinctive about Marcus is that he is of a set of triplets. He and his brothers – SIMON and REGGIE – run the Penn Auction House together. Marcus is seen as the Auction House Crown prince, being the eldest by minutes.
The Penn Auction House had been passed down to them through generations. It proudly hold art work from the likes of DAVID FINN as well as other antiquities that most would find difficult to get a hold of.
Marcus can seem emotionless, iron willed and carries that reputation for a reason. Not many would dare tackle him alone. Even fewer would go against him with his brothers by his side.
He is highly intelligent, well read and like his father, REGINALD, a gentleman at heart. He tends to listen more than he speaks. When he does offer words ears had best be pricked because has something important to share. On his good side you will find Marcus a noble protector. On his bad side you will find yourself on the auction block. In Coldford City you had better hope that term is used figuratively.

Since they were first built, the Shanties of Coldford City was home to the poorest people. Most of them worked low income jobs and even spending all the hours they could it was still difficult to make ends meet. Some gave up, turning to booze and drugs to fill their days instead, hoping it would help them forget they were stuck in a poverty trap.
As the north of the city thrived and the COLDFORD CITY football club came to be, a man named Roger Crane decided the people of the South should have their own team, a team they could cheer and support. No one in the Shanties could afford the fees it took to join the youth program of Coldford City so Coldford Athletic was established. Roger swore that it would always be open for the youth of the Shanties. The children there had idols to turn their attention to and aspire to be like. Idols they became. Coldford City and Coldford Athletic became fierce rivals. Despite their humble beginnings Athletic had one thing to boast that City never could – Golden Boot winner Samuel Connelly. City poured money into purchasing players from Luen and further but none could compete with Sammy Connelly’s natural skill.
Shanties born and raised Sammy Connelly showed the youth of the area that anything was possible, even with every social disadvantage weighing you down. Money couldn’t buy that golden boot – inter city football’s most prestigious prize – only hard work and perseverance could gain that, something the people of the Shanties have in abundance.
Our Shady City thriller’s most notable fan of Athletic is artist, DAVID FINN. Having grown up in the Clifton Alley part of the Shanties he has seen it at its worst.

In the Shady City it takes a brave cop to walk the streets. Shady City’s finest are as touch as the streets they protect. There are many confessions made within the walls of Coldford Police Department (CPD).
Such confessions include the kidnapping of a young girl named Marjorie (MAESTRO) or the murder of half the Filton University anatomy class (CONFESSIONS).
The brave men and women of CPD are always torn between what’s right and what needs to be done. Things can get sticky as the lines of morality are blurred.
When a reporter comes to them with one of the most incredible story they have ever heard it seems like it’s time to take the streets on force. The city is descending into chaos and it needs all the brave wearers of blue it can find. If those in uniform are willing to bend rules a little to get the job done, all the better.
