5 things you (probably) didn’t know about the Penn family

They are known in Coldford City as the royals of Main. The immediate family consist of REGINALD and RITA, with their identical triplet sons MARCUS, SIMON and REGGIE (Reginald Junior). The are prominent figures in the city and have featured often in the series of Shady City Thrillers. However, here are a few facts you might not know about them.

Reginald Penn with his triplet sons.

1 – THEY HOLD ACTUAL ROYAL TITLES

Originally from the country of Luen, the Penn lands are huge, expansive and have held a lot of power for centuries. They were one of the greatest marquessates in the country, with Marquis Philippe de Penn being given much of the credit for its founding during the Ballad of Blood age (centuries before the events of KNOCK KNOCK).

Their official house sigil is a white tower on a sea of royal blue. Although often, the marchand (merchant) pin is worn by the head of the house symbolising their auctioneering background.

After the second great war, Main was declared a legitimate kingdom making Reginald and Rita the reigning King and Queen of Penn and Main.

2 – THEY HAVE A LONG STANDING ROYAL RIVALRY IN KINGSGATE

The land of Main was originally granted by the The Chamberlain Crown who rule the Coldford Isles. At the time, Philippe de Penn and King James the first had a strong alliance and Philippe helped James maintain his throne. As thanks for that Philippe was granted the hand, or LE MAIN as it was called in the marquis’ mother tongue.

After the wars the alliance between House Penn and House Main shattered. The became enemies and ever since, the Chamberlain Crown has been trying to oust the Penns from the Coldford Isles sometimes resorting to real filthy tactics.

3 – THE PENNS ARE EFFICIENT IN TORTURE METHODS

From the rack to the pendulum, members of House Penn have always been known for their creative approach to torturing their enemies. They are a noble house in that they will stand by their people. They can also be ridiculously cruel to those deemed deserving. No thought is spared for an assaulter. No tear is shed for those who would harm innocents. No apologies are made for the pain inflicted upon molesters.

4 – ENGLISH IS NOT THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE

Whilst the immediate family and their extended relatives speak English of the Coldford Isles fluently, their native language is the French of Luen.

5 – THE PENN AUCTION HOUSE IN MAIN ISN’T THEIR LARGEST

At the heart of it, the family are an auctioneering dynasty. The Penn Auction House in Main has equally been a symbol of hope and of fear for generations. What you may not know is their largest and most prestigious auction house sits in the Penn lands in Luen.

Reggie and his triplet brothers.

No you’re not seeing treble. Reggie is one of the three Penn triplets. Whilst big brother MARCUS (centre) is the eldest by a few minutes Reggie enjoys being the baby of the team. Of his three brothers he probably holds the least responsibility although he is made to contribute to the family business at the insistence of their mother, Rita.

Reggie is a gaming fan. He especially enjoys playing LONESOME NIGHTS with none other than the son of High Court Judge, CAMERON DOYLE. To put his violent reputation aside one would actually find Reggie a friendly young man. Away from his brothers and duties, all he really wants to do is chill and play video games. Generosity to those who support them is a clear Penn trait instilled by their father, REGINALD. Reggie in particular is good to his friends as vet, ALEX FERRALD, discovered when he treated Reggie’s pet rats.

Reggie is a huge fan of COBY GAMES.

Reggie, like his brothers, is incredibly intelligent. Where Marcus has the head for leadership and middle brother Simon has the head for numbers Reggie’s prowess lies in knowing what draws a crowd. He is the one acquisition agents will turn to for advice on what will sell. Reggie seems to have a talent for picking out the next best thing. He did so for a drug-addicted artist, DAVID FINN, giving him the chance to redeem his failing career.

Reggie finds himself in trouble when he’s on his own.

What is most distinctive about Reggie is his love of rats. Growing up he developed a special fondness for rodents. He keeps many cages at a warehouse held by the Penn Gallery. He is especially interested in how far he can push their loyalty in exchange for a food pellets. Reggie has an inquisitive nature which led him to become fascinated with a rats survival instincts. He was tagged with the nickname ‘rat boy’ as a youngster. Reggie took the derogatory connotations and refashioned them into something he was proud of. Rats were the most successful species next to humans. They were survivors.

He is happiest with his brothers by his side. He is treated as the baby despite being born only minutes apart. Reggie struggles to stand above the imposing presence of Marcus or match the physicality of Simon. What Reggie does have is a keen survivalist instinct, honed from observing his rats. He can shelter, salvage and hold out in terrains even his brothers would likely perish in. In a place like Shady City survival instincts are just what is needed.

Character Profile: Marcus Penn

“You are not going to die but you will learn a lesson today.”

Name: Marcus Penn

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK ; HARBOUR HOUSE ; PURPLERIBBON ; ERROR 65

Occupation: Owner of the PENN AUCTION HOUSE.

Marcus is a no nonsense man who knows just what it takes to get a job done. He is fully acquainted with the darker side of the Shady City. With his strong connections to the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB and his auction house holding control of City Main there are enemies gathering around him.

What is most distinctive about Marcus is that he is of a set of triplets. He and his brothers – SIMON and REGGIE – run the Penn Auction House together. Marcus is seen as the Auction House Crown prince, being the eldest by minutes.

The Penn Auction House had been passed down to them through generations. It proudly hold art work from the likes of DAVID FINN as well as other antiquities that most would find difficult to get a hold of.

Marcus can seem emotionless, iron willed and carries that reputation for a reason. Not many would dare tackle him alone. Even fewer would go against him with his brothers by his side.

He is highly intelligent, well read and like his father, REGINALD, a gentleman at heart. He tends to listen more than he speaks. When he does offer words ears had best be pricked because has something important to share. On his good side you will find Marcus a noble protector. On his bad side you will find yourself on the auction block. In Coldford City you had better hope that term is used figuratively.
