What should have been.

Tonight’s blog should have been about fears, what shapes them and how they impact our daily lives. It was a carefully constructed article (If I do say so myself) that tackled the issues of childhood trauma and facing those fears. Then unfortunately WordPress happened. Thanks to a issue saving the article the whole thing was deleted. I’m not a huge tech whiz so there may be a small chance that it was my fault somehow but I’m trying to not cry so let’s just leave it at that.

Instead you may consider yourself having read a terrific article and are now thinking, “Wow! That’s probably the best thing I’ve ever read on the internet.” I’m trying to cheer myself up here if you will indulge a girl. Anyway, if you find my article zooming about cyber space feel free to nab it and prove me wrong.

This isn’t the greatest thing you’ll read on the internet but at least it’s a tribute 😉

In the meantime I’d like to continue on the theme of fear with a few words:

They sow doubt and plague our minds.

Fears hold us back; routed deep in our design.

A time comes when we don’t have a choice.

They come at us full on with a screaming voice.

Then we decide to run or to fight.

Do we give in to that all consuming fright?

Face them for the sake of those who rely.

Face them or at least give it a try.

Trouble is Brewing

The morning had just broken in the Shady City. Birds were trying to sing their song above the noise of morning deliveries to the few shops in the SHANTIES that were still open.
“Good morning!” Cheered Gemma, a habitual morning person, from behind the bar of the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB as the owner, TAWNY, sauntered in from the apartment above where she lived.
Tawny winced. She had a monster headache brewing and even the dim lighting of the club was proving irritable.
“Honey?” She said softly. The bar maid looked up. Tawny put her finger to her lips. Gemma giggled and skipped to the back of the bar to start brewing coffee. It wasn’t very often the Baroness of the club was found to be low energy but a killer hang over was taking hold. Tawny sat at the bar and laid a mug on top. On the mug was the crest of the HATHFIELD BAY football team, based on the islands she came from. On the back read BARONESS 1, the nickname she had been given in the area.
Gemma brought the coffee pot over with a fresh brew. The smell of the coffee already had a brightening effect. She lifted the mug and started inspecting the chips in the ceramic and the coffee stains.
“I think your mug has seen better days,” she commented. “You should throw it out and use one of the cool new ones.”
Tawny pouted with good humour. “This is my favourite one. I’m not throwing it away.”
Gemma shrugged and filled it. Tawny lifted it appreciatively to her lips and and sipped the first caffeine hit of the day hoping for a kick start.
She would never part with the mug in question. It had been a birthday gift from her niece TABITHA and as such the sentimental value couldn’t be measured.

A PLACE LIKE HOME

Tabitha had been watching her excitedly as she opened the box. Her smile wide, the gap between her front teeth making her seem younger, innocent in her excitement.
Tawny pulled out the mug and gave a giddy laugh when she saw the pale blue of her home town team. The reminder of the islands made her smile widen.
“Thanks TROUBLE,” she beamed, a nickname she had always used for her niece.
Tabitha dropped herself on the sofa beside her aunt and lifted her knees to her chest. “Look at the back,” she urged.
Tawny turned the mug round and when she read her nickname and the number she gave another hearty laugh. She reached an arm around Tabitha and pulled her close in a hug. She kissed her head. “I love it.”
“So what age does that make you?” Asked the younger.
Tawny raised her eyebrows. “The ripe age of twenty one,” she stated.
Tabitha chortled. “If you keep turning twenty one, you’re going to be younger than me.”
They both laughed. It was a simple moment in life but it is those simple moments that affect us the most. Sure the mug was old, worn and chipped but to rid of it would be to forget those laughs and giggles ever happened. It would be to forget Tabitha was an innocent girl once just looking to please her aunt. So happy she had found a simple little gift that would make her smile.
“You’re the best aunty in the world,” stated the girl as she cuddled into Tawny’s curvy frame.
Tawny couldn’t have been prouder. “Thanks Trouble. I try my best.”
Gemma dropping letters on the bar stirred the Baroness from her thoughts.

BROKER, BOSS AND BARONESS
“Some mail this morning,” she stated in commentary.
An envelope with the LAWMAKERS seal caught her attention first. She pushed off the bar stool and clutched the coffee in one hand and the letter in the other. The rest of the mail could wait.
“I’ll take this in the office. Will you be okay in here?” She asked her bar maid.
“I’m good,” Gemma assured.
“Just shout me on down if you need me,” Tawny instructed but she had already become distracted by the letter.
Gemma watched her for a few moments. The normally bright, cheery air had faded and it wasn’t the hangover.
“Are you okay?”
Tawny sighed and looked up from the letter. She smiled with her usual warmth. “Peaches and cream, honey,” she stated.
Gemma heard the door of the office click closed. Trouble was brewing.

LAWMAKERS

Trouble is certainly brewing at the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB with reporter SAM knocking on the door looking for answers to the disappearance of the CITY MAYOR.

“Rat boy!”

REGGIE pulled open the box excitedly. The triplets were growing fast but he was still holding onto the excitement of their birthday morning. The triplets were always given their gifts in order of age. First was MARCUS. That year he had been given a painting by an artist named Favon. He (or perhaps she) hailed from the country of Luen. Not much else was known about them. Marcus had taken an immediate shine to the work when the agents brought it into the AUCTION HOUSE. Seeing the joy in his son’s face the father – Reginald – had acquired it for himself, compensating the agents and the artist handsomely.

Marcus was already making plans for the appropriate place to hang the piece – which showed a sun lit scape with an ominous fleet of boats approaching a peer – when SIMON – the second born triplet – was given his gift. He was delighted with a set of boxing gloves along with a new punch bag. He had a lot of energy and it helped him to focus on sports.

Finally came the baby of the group. As Reggie opened the box a black nose with long whiskers peeked out. Reggie laughed with joy and pulled a fully grown, black rat out by the scruff of it’s neck.

“Oh,” the boys’ mother, Rita cried in dismay.

“Isn’t he cute mother?” Reggie asked.

Rita could feel her skin crawl as Reggie inspected the rodent.

“I’m sure he is. Do keep him away from me though, baby.”

Still holding it by the scruff of the neck Reggie looked into it’s beetle black eyes with a smile. It’s nose twitched at him. He turned to Marcus sat on the floor by the fire just to the left of him.

“What do you think?” He asked, seeking his brother’s approval. He dropped the rat into his lap.

Marcus lifted the creature into his hands and examined it. He adjusted his spectacles on his nose to assure he was getting the best view possible. His lip curled.

“Rodents carry disease you know,” he said. He passed the rat back to Reggie.

As Reggie caught it the rat squeaked. He turned to Simon. He lifted the rat so it was facing his brother, squeezing it’s body so that it squeaked at him. “What do you think, Si?”

“You’re a freak,” was Simon’s reply. He gave a sardonic a smile.

“I’m going to plant him in your bed so he can crawl up your arse,” Reggie teased.

“Watch your language,” the father warned .

“So what are you going to call it?” Simon asked as he slipped from the wine coloured arm chair onto the floor beside his brothers so he could get a closer look.

Reggie shook his head. “You don’t give them names. You grow too attached them. You can’t get too attached when you want to experiment.”

Reginald and Rita watched the triplets.

“A rat? You brought him a rat?” She asked her husband.

Reginald shrugged his shoulders. His mind was still occupied with work and the party that the triplets would be having at the auction house later that night. More gifts and well wishes from the auction house staff and benefactors.

“It’s what he asked for,” he reminded her.

She shivered, watching Reggie let the rat crawl along his arm from his hand to his shoulder, it’s worm like tail wrapping around him.

***

ALBANS school was an exclusive, privately taught facility in the city was where the triplets attended. Competing with the other private schools in Coldford it was a breeding ground for success. It had taught the Penn family for generations.

The school provided boarding facilities which Rita would never have the triplets use. They were dropped off each morning if not by their parents then by a driver. Marcus was the always one to lead them inside.

The boys and girls were taught in separate areas. It wasn’t until recess time they could mix in the central courtyard. That morning, Jill Danver saw Reggie stood by himself. His black back pack was hanging over one shoulder, his attention focused on a hand held electronic video game called Yeager Falls that was popular at the time. It wasn’t often he was far from his brothers so she seized the opportunity and approached him.

“Happy birthday,” she said.

It was now the day after his birthday but the sentiment was appreciated all the same. He switched off the game and looked up at her. She was a skinny thing, a couple of years older than him. She had long brown hair which hung in straw like strands. Her teeth seemed too large for her mouth and her nose a little too small for her face. She had something of a rodent like quality Reggie noted. She lifted the grey pleated skirt of the Albans uniform, flashing lacy pink panties underneath.

“Want a little birthday present?” She teased suggestively.

Reggie raised his eyebrows. He had read how rats, attached to electrodes that stimulated an orgasm, would continuously push the button. They would forget their young, forget food and water, they would forget all else until they died. Humans weren’t much different, Reggie surmised as she took his arm and started to tug him towards the gym hall, a square grey building that stood alone from the rest of the school. It was known as the place to go for amorous students.

Reggie pulled back. “Wait,” he said. “There’s something I want to show you first.”

“Really?” She was intrigued. She had already seen Reggie’s penis. It was a little crooked from what she could tell but she didn’t have many others to compare it too.

Reggie swung his back pack gingerly round to his front. It was open slightly. He pulled open the zip and reached inside. When he pulled out the black rat she cried out.

“Don’t you like him?” Reggie mocked. “At least I think it’s a him,” he said turning the rat over and inspecting its genitals.

Jill gasped. “That’s disgusting. You shouldn’t have that here. You are disgusting!” She was starting to become hysterical as Reggie held it out to her. “You’ll have that damn thing taken off you. You are such a creep.”

Reggie grinned. “If you say anything to anyone I’m going to give you the plague.”

She tried to smack the rat from his hand. Reggie lunged forward. She felt rat’s tiny claws on her legs. She shrieked again. Her terror caused the rat some anxiety so it did the only thing it could do and sunk it’s teeth into her thigh. Now Jill’s cries became that of pain. She managed to pull away and shoved Reggie as she ran off to the girls’ bathroom.

Reggie learned that day that a rat’s sharp incisors could tear human flesh quite easily.

Coldford City strip. Season 18 – 19

With the largest stadium and three of the most skilled players transferred from the coastal city of Luen, COLDFORD CITY are the team to beat in the National Premier League. Although having the money to buy top players does bring it’s fair share of problems. Striker, Andre Luis frequently dominates the headlines for his antics off the pitch as much as on. He is a frequent goal scorer but his personal life often takes centre stage. Rumours followed him from Luen that he was willing to throw games for the right pay. Some say it was in the Shady City he learned to PLAY THE GAME .

Striker, Andre Luis, brings victory against fierce rivals Coldford Athletic

Their trophy cabinets are full but there is just one prize that alludes them. Andre Luis has worked his entire career to receive the Golden Boot. As it stands that accolade belongs to City’s fierce rivals COLDFORD ATHLETIC and their star, Samuel Connelly.

A season unbeaten. City dominated the league.

Our Shady City thriller’s most notable fan of City is MARCUS PENN and his triplet brothers. As sponsors of the team the triplets always have a keen interest in their investments and so will always make sure City has the money they need to always be the best.

Coldford Athletic: Home of the Golden Boy

Team: Coldford Athletic

Stadium: Starkland Park

Sponsors: THE KNOCK KNOCK CLUB

Since they were first built, the Shanties of Coldford City was home to the poorest people. Most of them worked low income jobs and even spending all the hours they could it was still difficult to make ends meet. Some gave up, turning to booze and drugs to fill their days instead, hoping it would help them forget they were stuck in a poverty trap.

As the north of the city thrived and the COLDFORD CITY football club came to be, a man named Roger Crane decided the people of the South should have their own team, a team they could cheer and support. No one in the Shanties could afford the fees it took to join the youth program of Coldford City so Coldford Athletic was established. Roger swore that it would always be open for the youth of the Shanties. The children there had idols to turn their attention to and aspire to be like. Idols they became. Coldford City and Coldford Athletic became fierce rivals. Despite their humble beginnings Athletic had one thing to boast that City never could – Golden Boot winner Samuel Connelly. City poured money into purchasing players from Luen and further but none could compete with Sammy Connelly’s natural skill.

Shanties born and raised Sammy Connelly showed the youth of the area that anything was possible, even with every social disadvantage weighing you down. Money couldn’t buy that golden boot – inter city football’s most prestigious prize – only hard work and perseverance could gain that, something the people of the Shanties have in abundance.

Our Shady City thriller’s most notable fan of Athletic is artist, DAVID FINN. Having grown up in the Clifton Alley part of the Shanties he has seen it at its worst.
