Choices (An article taken from AUSA magazine 2009)

This weeks topic has to be choices. Why? Because I had a choice on what subject to choose and therefore it is choices.

Throughout our lives we are faced with decisions that shape the rest of our journey. What subjects to choose in school, what friends to keep, further study or the world of work. Young adulthood is fraught with life changing decisions. However, decisions are not done there. As we grow older our decisions not only shape our journey but mould it – marriage, family, career. Everything from the large to the small are our choices to be made.

It is the nature of this particularly tumultuous beast that not every decision we make are good ones. Some would say there is no such thing as a wrong decision and that everything happens for a reason. If you believe in karma, fate or such like or not one thing is certain when we make those wrong choices we have to suffer the consequences and deal with the new situations as they arise. Some of us are more able to apt at dealing with this than others and it all comes down to one major decision that is held in one by the entire planet. Fight or flight. This simple principle is the most effective decision we will ever make because when faced with this choice (Do we run to solitude? Do we stand and face the problem head on?) it shapes all of our other decisions. Do we stand and fight through advanced higher physics or do we retreat to something simpler and easier to cope with? Do we marry or do we wait to find what else is out there? Do we stick with the job we hate or do we move on to greener pastures? All of these issues come down to fight or flight.

So my darlings take some time and think of the decisions you have made so far today. Consider the results of those decisions. How much impact have you had on your own life in the time since you arose this morning.

How different would things be had you chosen differently.
