A closer look at characters featured in the Shady City thrillers.

Character Profile: Simon ‘Punchline’ Penn

“In the blue corner, weighing one hundred and fifty five pounds … Simon … Punchline … Penn!”

Name: Simon Penn

Age: 24

Occupation: Boxer

Simon always has game face.

The crowd goes wild whenever the middle PENN TRIPLET steps into the ring. A champion boxer, Simon is passionate about keeping in the best shape he can be. But don’t let that fool you, he also has great head for numbers and is the accounts keeper for the AUCTION HOUSE. Whilst big brother MARCUS takes the lead, Simon has been known to get into altercations with his little brother REGGIE. Even as boys none of them would question the eldest triplet. Reggie on the other hand teased, badgered and hit Simon until he would react. They were as close as any two who shared a face could be but they did play rough.

Simon discusses plans with his triplet brothers.

As young scoundrels growing up in City Main, their mother Rita had to rush her darling baby to Coldford General after Simon beat Reggie so badly he was knocked out cold. Father, REGINALD, felt it good for the boys to be prepared for the violence around them but Rita couldn’t bear to see any of them hurt.

They would always be working closely with each other so to channel Simon’s strength and frustrations he was turned to boxing. Starting in the small ‘Junior City Boxing Club’ in the upper West Simon quickly showed promise and before long was bringing home all kinds of trophies and medals.

Outside of the Auction House Simon takes to the ring. Most of his training is carried out at the Punchline Gym in City Main. But don’t worry there are others at many convenient locations around the city if you fancy taking your chances.

Character Profile: Reggie ‘Junior’ Penn

“Just close your eyes and think of City.”

Age: 24

Occupation: proprietor of the PENN AUCTION HOUSE.

Reggie and his triplet brothers.

No you’re not seeing treble. Reggie is one of the three Penn triplets. Whilst big brother MARCUS (centre) is the eldest by a few minutes Reggie enjoys being the baby of the team. Of his three brothers he probably holds the least responsibility although he is made to contribute to the family business at the insistence of their mother, Rita.

Reggie is a gamer fan. He especially enjoys playing LONESOME NIGHTS with none other than son of High Court Judge CAMERON DOYLE. To put his violent reputation aside one would actually find Reggie a friendly young man. Away from his brothers and duties all he really wants to do is chill and play video games. Generosity to those who support them is a clear Penn trait instilled by their father, REGINALD. Reggie in particular is good to his friends as vet, ALEX FERRALD, discovered when he treated Reggie’s pet rats.

Reggie is a huge fan of COBY GAMES.

Reggie, like his brothers is hyper intelligent. Where Marcus has the head for leadership and middle brother Simon has the head for numbers Reggie’s prowess lies in knowing what draws a crowd. He is the one acquisition agents will turn to for advice on what will sell. Reggie seems to have a talent for picking out the next best thing. He did so for artist, DAVID FINN, giving him the chance of redeeming his failing career.

Reggie finds himself in trouble when he’s on his own.

What is most distinctive about Reggie is his love of rats. Growing up he kept several animals but he had a special fondness for rodents. He keeps fifty cages at a warehouse held by the Penn Gallery. He is especially interested in how far he can push their loyalty in exchange for a food pellets. Reggie sees himself something of a scientist. If he didn’t have family loyalty to the Penn House he could very well been in a laboratory.

He is happiest with his brothers by his side but treated as the baby despite being born minutes apart Reggie struggles to stand above the imposing presence of Marcus or match the physicality of Simon. What Reggie does have though is a keen survivalist instinct, honed from observing his rats. He can shelter, salvage and hold out in terrains even his brothers would likely perish in. In a place like Shady City survival instincts are just what is needed.

Character Profile: Chloe Grover

Age: 19

What can we say about our Chloe? She has certainly had her troubles even by SHADY CITY standards.

Retrieved from the HARBOUR HOUSE facility by KNOCK KNOCK club manager, DENNIS, she thought she was on her way to a happily ever after with her knight in shining armour. From the frying pan into the fire she went as she was sold into prostitution.

Chloe is pretty, broken, sweet natured and feeble minded. She has the perfect combination of attributes to make her prime prey for the SHARKS IN THE WATER of Coldford. To put it kindly she has made Dennis a great deal of money. There are certain rules though around the Knock Knock club that aren’t to be broken and Dennis has been bending a few of them to suit his own agenda. Time is up for her keeper which means time may be up for Chloe too.

As we move on to Volume 2 of Knock Knock we can be assured of Chloe holding a great piece of the puzzle as the story continues to unfold.

Character Profile: Tawny McInney aka The Baroness

“Good evening folks and welcome to the Knock Knock club!”

Age: 56

Occupation: Founder of the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB

Tawny was a much loved figure in the Shanties area of the city where her club is located. A singer, performer, comedienne she was never more at home than when she was on her stage making others smile. Affectionately known as the Baroness by her patrons. With the help of her partner, AGNES, she has learned to navigate some difficult events.

She faced down Fullerton bulldozers, she faced CPD but she hadn’t yet faced Judge Doyle.

A native of the HATHFIELD BAY Island she traveled to the city with her brother Rob in search of more opportunities. The first recession had almost closed the bay down and resources on the islands were limited.

Tawny and Agnes work through the hard times of Knock Knock together.

What is most distinctive about Tawny is that she is the aunt of Knock Knock boss Lady TABITHA. Where most see Tabitha as ruthless and, dare we say, murderous, Tawny sees another side of a her niece and they are close. Despite Tawny being laid back and kind natured she can be fiercely protective of those she loves.

Tabitha poses with her Aunt Tawny and Aunt Agnes.

She has the reputation of being flaky and colourful in her views of reality. Having experienced a mental break down her fragility is exposed when her beloved club comes under attack.

Resident 0109: Tawny McInney. TRAUMA.

The Baroness was a much loved figure. An attack on her club would split the city in two.

Trauma after an attack on her cabaret club brings Resident 0109 for rehab. Welcome to Harbour House.

Character Profile: Paddy (Patrick) Mack

Age: 34

Occupation: Manager Mack and Son’s whiskey distillery

One of five Mack children born to Brendan and Anne Mack. Paddy is the second eldest of his three brothers (Kieran, Aiden, Alfie) and his sister (Siobhan). He is seen as the most competent to lead the Distillery. He is the most level headed of the Macks but he isn’t without the skills and endurance it requires to run such a tough industry in the Shady City. The MACK DISTILLERY has been supplying the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB since it’s founding and as a result Paddy (AKA Patrick) has a steady working relationship with the Boss Lady TABITHA.

Paddy is a good looking, kind natured man but with the roguish charm one would expect from the Bellfield area. He and his brothers are the biggest supporters of football club BELLFIELD FC. The fans of the club had gotten such a terrible reputation after riots started at an away match it was up to Paddy to step in and shut the violence down so that the team that his distillery sponsored wasn’t removed from the league completely.

The explosions around the city linked to the HEADLINERS are rumoured to have been assisted and in fact provided by the Mack’s and their factory workers. Although, Paddy is attempting to bring them into a more peaceful era things in Shady City won’t improve unless he is willing to show a little strength through violence.

Paddy will be making his entrance in Volume 2 of the Knock Knock series.

Character Profile: Lydia Lowe

Age: 24

Occupation: Knock Knock girl.

Lydia isn’t afraid to throw herself into the thick of the action. As a Knock Knock girl she is well protected. Most people know that you are taking a huge risk if you think you are able to get too close to the girls.

Lydia gives reporter, Sam, a much needed lift.

From the Northern town of Bournton, Lydia is a new face in the Shady City. Normally a new face with a new story would be cause for suspicion but her sweet disposition, friendly approach coupled with an endearing accent make it easy for her to blend into Coldford society.

She is well liked by the patrons of Knock Knock as well as the other staff. Although she often finds herself on the receiving end of Tabitha’s aggression she takes it in her stride. She has a job to do after all, a job that goes beyond flirting with customers, dancing and distracting.

Lydia keeps her eyes on the prize.

Lydia has her reasons for being in the Knock Knock club and it’s more than just a job to her. It is the ideal place to observe, to learn and to build a case. In order to do that she has to keep her head down, do her job and keep her feet firm when it comes to back lash from the Boss Lady herself.

Lydia still has a huge part to play in Sam’s story. As someone who has been on the inside, she has seen it all.

Character Profile: Sam Crusow

“And I had to ask, what had I gotten myself into?”

Name: Sam Crusow

Age: 36

Occupation: Reporter

Sam was never shy of a story. A hard hitting reporter with a good heart he is always trying to get to the truth of the matter. The trouble is, in the Shady City that truth can be messy and digging around in the background of those in charge can lead to disaster.

He is honest to a fault and caring but when challenged he will stand up against even the most dangerous of villains. Sam is loved and hated in equal measure. Those who he has helped reveal the truth and those he has brought down with his journalism.

Nothing will stop Sam getting to the truth of the story. Even a night at the Knock Knock Club.

Originally from the Jamestown area – a quiet little suburb – he has adapted to life in Coldfold. His work for the COLDFORD DAILY was seeing him and his wife Theresa through the recession.

The story will be chased to some of the shadiest places in the Shady City.

He has chased the story on an explosion in the WEIR HOTEL, he has pushed CONFESSIONS KILLER Tracey Campbell for an interview and he was one of the first to report when Alice Beckingridge of the BECKINGRIDGE FINANCIAL FIRM was accused of murder. Of all these stories none compared to when he was led to the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB in search of the missing Mayor. That was when the true dirty face of the city began to reveal itself.

It’s not easy being a reporter in a city that is tearing itself apart from within. Sam is learning that the hard way.
