A closer look at characters featured in the Shady City thrillers.

Character Profile: Olivia (Platt) Hickes

Age: 40

Occupation: Social Worker on behalf of the Child Services Committee.

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK ; PURPLE RIBBON

In the Shady City there are so few who go out of their way to help others. Olivia made it her life’s work. However, viewing the good in the world can make you vulnerable to predators of which there are many.

Olivia dreads hearing the truth from her husband.

Olivia is kind hearted but stubborn natured. She opened her home to troubled young girls including the Knock Knock BOSS LADY. Little did she know she was exposing them and her family to threat she hadn’t realised had gotten so close.

Olivia’s son, Milo, is her top priority.

Olivia has a lot of work to do to make it up to those girls. She feels she failed them but despite the devastating set backs she is determined, one way or another, she will find justice for those girls. A huge barrier stands in her way though that she must overcome.

A Long Fall from the Top

A husband and wife team. Mr and Mrs Heath are the dynamo duo of the BECKINGRIDGE FINANCIAL FIRM. They are the leading investment consultants and have brought more clients in in their time that most of the other long standing members of the team.

The live fast. They sell hard. They fall far.

They enjoy a fancy life in the expensive FILTON district. In order to keep that up though someone has to pay. That’s where the wide smiles for their clients come in. They will sit you down, offer you a cup of tea and before the end of the meeting you will be rest assured that your money is in the safest hands in the Shady City. After all, with a son, Taylor, to put through University the Heaths know the importance of money and the family unit.

BECKINGRIDGE TOWER may seem intimidating, cold and soulless even but let the Heaths explain the exciting vision they have for your money and you will feel like you are in your own living room. You will become part of the Beckingridge family.

It was an event known as the Free Fall Massacre. Beckingridge Tower would never be the same. Those passing would remember the bodies of the fallen 59 that littered the court yard.

Character Profile: Theresa Crusow

Name: Theresa Crusow

Age: 35

Occupation: Housewife

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK

Wife of reporter, SAM CRUSOW, Theresa had also been studying journalism at City College when she met her husband to be and their friend MADELINE LOWER. After the first year she left, deciding she didn’t wish to pursue one of Coldford’s most dangerous professions. Instead she stayed at home where the danger gathered around her, waiting on the call to tell her her husband had asked questions of the wrong person or knocked on the wrong door.

But Theresa is more than just a reporter’s wife. She has secrets of her own. However, whilst Sam is Hell bent on chasing a story on the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB and how it connects to the disappearance of Mayor Feltz. Whilst his focus is stolen he fails to see what is happening closer to home.

Theresa is high maintenance, a little self absorbed and easily swayed by con men and vagabonds. You could say she is easy prey in the Shady City and whilst her husband’s attention is drawn elsewhere the vultures will circle.

Character Profile: Micky Doyle

“I’ll deliver the city; You deliver the justice.”

The Doyle family have a reputation in the Shady City and cousin Micky has his eyes set on the position of City Mayor.  He will be given the opportunity to do what he can to make sure order reaches every part of the city from the comfort of City Hall.

If the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB is responsible for Mayor Feltz going missing Micky can’t be too mad. It has left a spot open for him. Micky is ambitious, so when the door of the Mayor’s office opens he sees opportunity. Why shouldn’t he? He can play a round of politics better than most. Will he improve matters in the Shady City though? He does have some skeletons he can’t let escape his closet.

His powerful friends need his particular charm. Whilst his cousin rules with fear from the HIGH COURT, the LAW MAKERS need someone who can win over a city. Micky Doyle is the wild card of the Doyle family. He is the happy face they put on in times of trouble.

Character Profile: The Captain (Charles ‘Chick’ Owen)

Name: Charles ‘Chick’ Owen

Age: 57

Occupation: CEO of Owen Inc.

The patriarch of the Owen family. They call him The Captain (Cappy among friends).

He is a true captain of industry, head of the Owen family and holder of the family skeletons. He has the money to buy just about anything. How does a whole city sound? Going cheap.

The Cappy strikes a good deal with the Law Makers.

Accusations against his family left him with no choice but to react harshly.

“It doesn’t matter if he did it or not. He’s one of our own,” said Chick.

A KAPPA SO brother for life, the Cappy is no stranger to cover ups.Not a shred of verifiable evidence was found. The clean up boys did a good job.

When noise from the KNOCK KNOCK CLUB starts interrupting business again it’s time for Chick to flex some muscle.

As difficult an enemy he can be to make he prides himself on reasoning. It just so happens that his reasoning can prove too much for some. He refuses to be backed into a corner.

Being the head of such a powerful family Chick takes great pride in his family name as such protects it fiercely. He speaks fondly of his ancestry who were explorers and pioneers. From discovering new lands and opportunities to the founding of the Kappa So fraternity he uses the impact the Owens have had in the past to prepare them for global reach in the future.


The Knock Knock Boss Lady has made an enemy of the Owen family but she’s ready for that challenge.

Character Profile: Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Owen

Age: 45

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK

Occupation: Lawyer

Younger brother to CHARLES ‘CHICK OWEN better known as The Cappy. Ronnie is one of the leading share holders in the corporation of his family name – OWEN INC. Like the rest of his family he has the big personality that comes from the Great States but he is well known to be the most grounded Owen. He is the steady cog in the Owen Corp Machine that is laying waste to the SHADY CITY.

Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Owen answers some difficult questions outside of the Court House.

It’s not difficult being seen as the level head though when you have a nephew like BERNARD ‘BUDDY’ OWEN to contend with. Ronnie served his time in KAPPA SO as all the men in his family have so he is well aware of some of the shenanigans that goes on inside the CHAPTER HOUSE. (Shenanigans is really the only way we could describe it).

Ronnie tries to be the level head of his family.

Ronnie is a defense lawyer so he believes in all cards on the table but when he is given his most difficult client yet to defend in the court of JUDGE DOYLE he has some tough decisions to make. Right or wrong. Guilty or not guilty. Either way it will expose some of the skeletons in his own family closet.

Character Profile: Detective Joel Hickes

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK

Age: 42

Occupation: Detective for COLDFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK

A good man in a viper pit. Detective Hickes always tries to follow the rules but tackling the villainy in the Shady City means that you have no choice but to sink to low levels in order to get the job done. Under the watchful eye of the LAW MAKERS his job is rarely easy.

Detective Hickes and partner watch Sam Crusow closely after the death of someone close brings him in for questioning.

Beginning his career walking the beat in COLDFORD CITY, Hickes became very familiar with what was going on on the city streets. He has seen it at its worst but he has also seen it at it’s very best. He has seen the people come together through financial depressions and much worse. It leaves him with hopes for a brighter future.

Sam Crusow of the Coldford Daily has questions to answer after the death of someone close to him.

The KNOCK KNOCK club is well known. He was just a boy at the academy when the BARONESS first set the club up but he remembers clearly the troubles and the BOSS LADY taking over. He can’t condone what the club has done under the direction of Tabitha but he also can’t condemn her completely. He has after all required her help in more than one sticky situation whilst trying to keep his detective hands clean

Detective Hickes talks to Tabitha of the Knock Knock Club and Sam of the Coldford Daily.

Hickes’ job is just getting started. There’s still much work to be done to clean the mean streets of Coldford. Let’s start with deciding who the true villains really are…

Character Profile: Kim Adams

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK

Age: 37

Occupation: International Agent

Kim is the daughter of famous boxer SONNY ADAMS better known as the BOURNTON BLIZZARD. Born in the northern town of BOURNTON, Kim was raised in the Mid East area of Cardyne but she never lost that northern spirit. Her father taught her strength, resilience and fair play for the BLIZZARD was nothing if not an ethical boxer.

Her father’s career was ended after a match up with SIMON PENN which led to disaster in the ring but rather than vengeance driving what she does she seeks to do what her father started and have the triplets against the ropes.

Her work is unique in the sense that she is out with the jurisdiction of the LAW MAKERS of the Shady City. This gives her a chance to see things from an outside perspective as our reporter, SAM, continues on his story.

Although she hasn’t appeared in KNOCK KNOCK yet she is set to make an impact in volume 2 because her agency have been building their case and their sights are set on the BOSS LADY of the club.

Character Profile: Agnes Wilde

“Welcome to the Knock Knock club. Leave your troubles at the door.”

Age: 51

Occupation: KNOCK KNOCK board member (BROKER)

Features in: KNOCK KNOCK ; HARBOUR HOUSE

Agnes met the BARONESS back in the days when she was busking in the SHANTIES. They immediately took a shine to one another and they had a shared vision of a club for all, a place in the poorest part of town where people could leave their troubles at the door.

Agnes has seen some terrible things.

Running a place like the KNOCK KNOCK club is no easy task. Where TAWNY was the face the patrons recognised and adored, Agnes was the sensible head behind the scene that helped build the club into what it is.

Agnes and Tawny face tough times together.

Agnes is kind of face but sharp of tongue. She is a no nonsense woman who isn’t afraid of a challenge and boy does guiding her niece, TABITHA prove a challenge! Blood niece of Tawny, Agnes has taken on the mother role for Tabitha and whilst they share a mutual respect they often clash.

As our reporter SAM CRUSOW begins the telling of KNOCK KNOCK he will discover some interesting reveals from Agnes who has a unique perspective on the club, on the BARONESS, on the BOSS LADY and on the night the club was burned down.

Character Profile: Ernest Beckingridge

Age: 51

Occupation: CEO Beckingridge Financial Firm

Features in: MAESTRO, KNOCK KNOCK

Ernest is at the helm of one of the biggest financial investment firms in the Shady City, he hails from the richest family in the area and he would give anything to be able to give it all up.

He is a mild mannered man who as a boy didn’t see himself imprisoned in a suit and shackled to the penthouse office of BECK TOWER. He wanted a different life. He wanted to be an entertainer but with there being only him and his sister, Elizabeth, it was up to him to take over the family empire whilst Elizabeth became a novelist.

Ernest later met and married Alice. She was seen as a dragon of a woman by most but the docile CEO needed her bite by his side. Together they had two children – Catherine and George. However, there was another addition to the family that the high ceilinged halls of Beckingridge Manor managed to conceal. They do say that behind MANSION WALLS are where the true skeletons lie, not in the closets.

Ernest has not had an easy time and despite being placid in nature his family name and his money has managed to help him weather some terrible storms. From the accusations of child murder against Alice, the embezzlement of company funds, the school shooting Catherine was involved in and the kidnapping of his son by music tutor VINCENT BAINES.

Now Ernest is brought to the forefront again when he receives a phone call late at night to inform him that benefactors of a charity ball being held at BECK TOWER have been leaping from the roof inexplicably. Could this be the final blow that finally topples one of Coldford’s largest empires?
